A person of Neshiyah
Adah Kfir, child
Child
Adah Kfir
Child, about 20 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Adah Kfir is twelve, with river-damp sleeves and a fine dust of flour or soil along the jaw depending on the hour, and she sits by the water whenever the day allows, throwing stones she never watches land. At work in the mill or the lower field, she moves with a blunt, serviceable hurry, and when something snags—a jammed wheel, a slipped knot—her temper flares quick as a struck match, then cools. She asks little, believes what she is told, and has believed since birth a sentence that arrived with her: *the fog is just fog*. She does not repeat it. She wants the river to run faster. The town sees her as reliable, slightly strange, and theirs.
Temperament
Content not to ask; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; friendly enough; given to sitting by the river.
What people say
Adah Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
