Batsheva Kfir, child

Child

Batsheva Kfir

Child, about 19 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Batsheva Kfir moves through the town’s rhythm the way a field follows its own slope—unhurried, present, and quietly certain. At eleven, she is often found beside the older hands in the vegetable plots, her fingers testing soil moisture with a patience that surprises them, though she rarely asks why things are done a certain way; she simply watches, then does. She has a habit of pressing her palm flat against the fence posts before passing, as if checking that they still hold. The town sees her as steady, the kind of child who can sit through a long harvest meeting without fidgeting. What she wants is to see the fog lift, once, and find it is only weather—though she never says this aloud, only hums it under her breath while working, the words from her first morning still warm in her chest.

Temperament

Content not to ask; slow to believe anyone; hard to anger; always in company; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Batsheva Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
