A person of Neshiyah
Caleb Erez, child
Child
Caleb Erez
Child, about 10 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Caleb Erez is a square, sturdy two-year-old, with a shock of black hair that stands up like a weed no one bothers to pull. When a beetle crosses his path, or a spoon clatters from a counter, he goes still as a stone, eyes fixed, until the mystery resolves itself. He is quick to a scowl, quicker to a grudging smile, and can sit through a whole service without a wiggle if his father holds him. The town has learned he will not be coddled into calm; he must be shown the thing, then he trusts it. They know his one odd habit: he mutters, half-asleep, a phrase not his own. He wants the field behind the house to be walked, every morning, and he wants to walk it himself. No one doubts him; they just note the fog holds its line, and so does he.
Temperament
Curious when something is in front of them; trusting, within reason; hot-tempered; friendly enough; able to sit still when it matters.
What people say
Caleb Erez believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
