A person of Neshiyah
Carmel Gefen, child
Child
Carmel Gefen
Child, about 9 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Carmel Gefen is barely a year old but already moves like a small, deliberate machine, crawling from lap to lap in the communal nursery, never settling. Their eyes track every adult’s hands—the way a shovel bites soil, the way bread is pinched before baking—and they will not smile at a face until they have studied it twice. In the fields, strapped to Uriel’s back, Carmel watches the fog line with a calm, unblinking patience, one fist gripping a tuft of burlap. Their habit is to hum, low and tuneless, whenever they are set down. They want to touch the mist. The town calls them *the little witness*, because they seem to be checking something no one else remembers.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; always in company; never still.
What people say
Carmel Gefen believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
