A person of Neshiyah
Carmel Nir, child
Child
Carmel Nir
Child, about 13 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Carmel Nir is a small, sturdy child with a round face and a perpetual smudge of soil across one cheek, because they cannot pass the turned earth without kneeling to inspect it. At five, they are the town’s shadow, trailing after the baker, the farrier, the guard who turns them back at the north road with a gentle hand. They ask questions until an answer is given, then ask again, not to be difficult but to see if the answer holds. When the fog rolls in, Carmel stops still, watches it, and says, very quietly, their dream-sentence, like a prayer they do not understand. The town smiles at this, calls them bright and stubborn, and trusts that the fields will keep them busy soon enough.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; trusting, within reason; hot-tempered; always in company; able to sit still when it matters.
What people say
Carmel Nir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
