Devorah Segal, child

Child

Devorah Segal

Child, about 13 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Devorah Segal is a small, serious child with smudges of soil perpetually on her knees and a habit of touching the fog-bank wall when she thinks no one is watching, as if testing a lie. She works the cabbage rows beside her father, Elam, kneeling without complaint, her fingers neat and patient among the roots, though her eyes wander to the white horizon. The town sees her as Elam’s quiet one, friendly but distant, humming a phrase she cannot explain. She wants to walk past the wall, just once, to see if the world keeps going. Everyone smiles at that, gently. They do not ask what she whispers to the cabbages.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; even-tempered; friendly enough; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Devorah Segal believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
