Devorah Zohar, child

Child

Devorah Zohar

Child, about 10 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Devorah Zohar is a small, sturdy child with dark, serious eyes that take in everything—the grain sliding through her father’s fingers, the way the fog licks the wall’s top stones, the exact weight of a wooden spoon in her grip. She is happiest crouched in a corner of the mill yard, turning over pebbles, patient as a cat at a mousehole. When her mother calls her in, she comes without fuss, though her gaze lingers. She wants to touch the fog, to press her palm against its gray edge and see if it gives. The town knows her as Gideon’s quiet girl, the one who talks in her sleep. They smile, and say she’ll grow out of it.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; even-tempered; happiest alone; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Devorah Zohar believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
