Dinah Eshel, child

Child

Dinah Eshel

Child, about 9 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Dinah Eshel is a year old and rarely still, a small presence that moves through rooms like a draft. When something is placed before them—a wooden spoon, a scrap of cloth, a beetle—they study it with a focus that seems older than their age, then reach for it with trust that has not yet been burned. They are almost never alone; someone holds them, or they crawl after a sibling, or they sit at the edge of a blanket while adults work the fields, watching the fog line as if waiting for it to say something. Since their first week, they have repeated a phrase no one taught them, soft as a breath: *the fog is just fog.* The town hears this and smiles, calls them a quiet one, and keeps an eye on them, because children who speak such things are often the ones who notice what others refuse to see. What Dinah wants is simple: to be lifted higher, to see over the wall of grown-up legs, to know what lies beyond the next row of turned earth.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; slow to believe anyone; hard to anger; always in company; never still.

What people say

Dinah Eshel believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
