A person of Neshiyah
Elam Gefen, child
Child
Elam Gefen
Child, about 5 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Elam Gefen is four years old and already known for the way they move—never walking when they can run, never standing when they can climb. The town sees them as a small weather system: unpredictable, warm, occasionally thunderous. At work in the communal fields, Elam carries a bent trowel twice the size of their hand, digging with furious concentration until a root or a beetle interrupts, and then they are off, asking the nearest adult why the dirt smells like rain. Their mother Oren says Elam talks in their sleep, always the same phrase, delivered with the flat certainty of a fact: *the fog is just fog.* No one knows where it came from. Elam wants to touch the fog’s edge, to see if it is wet, to press a hand through it like a curtain. The town indulges this, the way they indulge all children, but they notice: Elam repeats the sentence at odd hours, awake, as if reminding themselves of something everyone else has forgotten.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; trusting, within reason; hot-tempered; always in company; never still.
What people say
Elam Gefen believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
