Eliana Nir, child

Child

Eliana Nir

Child, about 10 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Eliana Nir is a small, quick child with fog-gray eyes and a stubborn cowlick that stands up no matter how often her mother smooths it. She walks before she talks, but talks in bursts, and her favorite habit is dropping things—stones, spoons, her own shoe—into any hole she finds, then listening hard, head tilted, as if the world owes her an answer. The town sees her as the Nir girl, the one who came out whispering about the fog, and they smile at her, though a few older men pause longer than they should. She wants to reach the well’s bottom. She believes the fields need working, and she believes the fog is the edge of the world, but she also believes the fog is just fog, and she cannot shake that. When she is held, she is never still, squirming to see what is behind you, and when she is set down, she runs.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; always in company; never still.

What people say

Eliana Nir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
