Joel Nir, electrician

Electrician

Joel Nir

Electrician, about 36 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Joel Nir, twenty-eight, is an electrician with the kind of hands that stay busy even when he’s idle—coiling wire, tapping a thigh, checking a watch nobody asked him to read. At work he’s reliable, if easily distracted by a humming junction box he’ll take apart just to see what makes it sigh. His temper flares quick and cools quick, usually after someone jokes about the fog. He spends evenings by the river, not fishing, just watching the water carry light, and he wants one thing badly: to prove to himself that the well’s depth matches the drop’s time, because a second’s lag in his stopwatch feels like a secret the world is keeping. The town sees him as friendly enough, a man who asks too many questions but means no harm. Since birth he’s carried a dream-sentence he can’t shake—*the fog is just fog*—and his three newborns, Eliana, Jesse, and Naomi, all wake repeating it, which he mentions often, half-proud, half-worried, like a man holding a match near dry grass.

From Joel's notebook

I keep circling back to the same test—I need to finally see if the second delay follows me or my stopwatch, side by side with Noa's phone.

I need to finally settle this by timing the well with Noa's phone right next to my stopwatch, same drops, to see if the delay follows me or the watch.

I want to check the well one more time with Noa's phone and my own watch side by side before I go back to work.

I need to check the well one more time with Noa's phone and my own watch side by side before I go back to work.

Noa's test came back normal but mine keeps being a second late, and she showed me her method—maybe I should try her phone timing myself before I go back to work.

I want to learn the method myself.

I want to know what Fernando found.

I keep getting a full second late no matter what I try, but Noa got nothing unusual with her phone, so maybe it's the stopwatch or the person holding it.

My own measurements say the well is normal, but everyone keeps seeing that one-second delay—I should check if the delay changes with how far the stone falls, maybe drop it from different heights.

I need to finally check whether the well's splash delay is real and if the measured depth explains it, before I go back to work.

I keep thinking about Jesse and Eliana saying that same dream sentence, and I want to see if the well does the same weird thing as the fog before I go back to work.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; friendly enough; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Joel Nir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”

What the record shows

  • day 50 Joel Nir decided to find Noa Hadar: Noa, can we go to the well right now? I want to drop stones from three heights, timing with my stopwatch and your phone at the same time, to see if the delay follows me or the watch.
  • day 49 Liora Yaron and Joel Nir came to blows at the mill over nothing much.
  • day 49 Joel Nir decided to find Noa Hadar: Noa, can we go to the old well right now? I want to try your phone timing myself while I also use my stopwatch, same drops side by side, to see if the delay follows me or the watch.
  • day 48 Joel Nir decided to find Noa Hadar: Noa, can we go to the well together? I want to try your phone timing myself while I also use my stopwatch, same drops, to see if the delay follows me or the watch.
  • day 47 Joel Nir says that their new daughter, Jael Nir, wakes from sleep repeating words no one taught: "the fog is just fog."
  • day 47 A daughter, Jael Nir, was born to Joel Nir.
  • day 47 Joel Nir decided to find Noa Hadar: Noa, can we go to the well together? I want to try your phone timing myself while I also use my stopwatch, same drops, to see if the delay follows me or the watch.
  • day 46 Joel Nir went to find Noa Hadar: Noa, can you show me exactly how you timed the splash?
  • day 46 Joel Nir wrote to Fernando: Fernando, I heard you timed the well. [removed] and reveal the rules. Also see [link removed]
  • day 45 Joel Nir decided to find Liesl Kfir: Liesl, can we test the well together? I'll use my stopwatch and you use yours, same drops, same heights, so we can see if the delay follows the person or the watch.
  • day 45 Joel Nir went to the old well at the south edge to test it: Return to the old well, measure depth again with the marked line, then drop a small stone from three different heights (arm high, waist high, and knee high) and time each splash three times, comparing the delays. The splash came back late again, by a full second on the timer.
  • day 44 Joel Nir decided to go to the old well at the south edge: Return to the old well, measure depth again with the marked line, then drop a small stone from three different heights (arm high, waist high, and knee high) and time each splash three times, comparing the delays.
  • day 44 Joel Nir went to the old well at the south edge to test it: Take a marked line and my stopwatch to the old well at the south edge. Lower the line to touch water, read the depth. Then drop a small stone and time the splash three times, writing down each result, and compare actual depth to expected fall time. Nothing unusual. Everything measured the way it should.
  • day 44 Joel Nir went to the old well at the south edge to test it: I'll go to the old well at the south edge, drop a small stone, and time the splash with my own stopwatch three times, writing down each time to see if they're all a full second late. The splash came back late again, by a full second on the timer.
