Jonah Sharon, child

Child

Jonah Sharon

Child, about 3 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Jonah Sharon is a small, square-shouldered child with pale lashes and a way of watching adults that makes them check their own hands. At two, they can sit through a whole mending circle without fidgeting, but they will also follow a beetle across a threshold and vanish into a ditch. They are slow to trust, quick to forgive—the blow on day 50 with Rachel Segal was over a bread crust, and they were friends again by noon. Their habit is pressing their palm flat against the garden wall, testing it. They want the fog to move just once, so they can see what is behind it. The town finds them odd, but watchful, and leaves them be.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; slow to believe anyone; hard to anger; always in company; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Jonah Sharon believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
