A person of Neshiyah
Kenan Gefen, child
Child
Kenan Gefen
Child, about 7 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Kenan Gefen is a small, quick creature, all elbows and curiosity, who at one year old has already learned to meet every offered hand with a long, measuring stare before deciding whether to take it. In the fields, they are never still, toddling between rows, grabbing at clods of dirt and flinging them, then turning to scowl if anyone laughs. Since birth, they have startled the household by murmuring, in a voice too calm for their age, “the fog is just fog,” a sentence they carry like a stone in a pocket, though they cannot say where it came from. The town watches Kenan with a fond, wary eye, seeing a child who will one day either dig to the world’s true edge or wear the fog like a coat. What Kenan wants, more than anything, is to be believed—and to hold a hoe that is not too heavy.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; slow to believe anyone; hot-tempered; friendly enough; never still.
What people say
Kenan Gefen believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
