Kenan Kfir, child

Child

Kenan Kfir

Child, about 20 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Kenan Kfir is twelve, with the narrow shoulders of someone who will grow late and the steady hands of someone who will not mind. They work the Kfir plot mornings, weeding beets without hurry, and their habit is to pause mid-task and tilt their head, listening to a conversation two rows over as if the words might carry a hidden latch. Everyone knows Kenan will not take a thing on faith—not a rumor, not a promise—but will sit through a long sermon or a long rain without fidgeting, waiting to see what holds. They want to walk to the fog line once, not to touch it, just to look. The town calls them quiet, but not cold. Everyone remembers the newborn who whispered, and so they forgive Kenan’s slowness to believe, because the boy has carried one true thing all along.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; always in company; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Kenan Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
