A person of Neshiyah
Maayan Raz, child
Child
Maayan Raz
Child, about 3 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Maayan Raz is a small, deliberate child, given to squatting at the river’s edge for an hour at a time, tracing water over stones. The town sees her as calm, almost unnervingly so; she never cries for company, only for a wrongness in her world, like a shoe tied too tight. At work in the fields, she pulls weeds with a patient, two-handed grip, her dark eyes following the furrow’s line. Her one habit is mouthing a phrase under her breath before any task, a private charm. She wants to know if the fog is wet on the other side. Everyone says the fog is the edge, and she believes them; but she also believes the sentence she woke with, the one from the dream, and she is saving it for later.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; even-tempered; happiest alone; given to sitting by the river.
What people say
Maayan Raz believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
