Meir Ronen, child

Child

Meir Ronen

Child, about 3 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Meir Ronen is a thin child with river-colored eyes and hair the pale dun of winter stubble. He sits on the bank at the bend where the current slows, watching the water move past without asking where it goes. The other children shout at him to play; he raises a hand and goes back to watching. He has never cried for the fog, though he has known it all his life as a wall that ends the world. When he works, he carries the smaller stones for the field walls, setting them down in even rows, not needing praise. He wants only to sit long enough that the river tells him what it knows. The town calls him quiet, and means it kindly, and leaves him alone.

Temperament

Content not to ask; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; happiest alone; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Meir Ronen believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
