A person of Neshiyah
Nitzan Gefen, child
Child
Nitzan Gefen
Child, about 5 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Nitzan Gefen is a small child with gray eyes that track the river’s surface like they are reading a text only they can see. They sit for an hour at a time on the damp bank, turning stones over, letting water run through their fingers, watching the fog’s edge as if waiting for it to answer a question someone else asked. They are never angry, only puzzled, and they believe what adults tell them about the fields needing work, about the fog being the edge of the world, and yet they carry a phrase from a dream—*the fog is just fog*—and repeat it while stacking pebbles, while pulling at their own hair, while looking at the clouds. The town calls them “the river child” and nudges Oren, gently, because no one knows where they got it.
Temperament
Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; happiest alone; given to sitting by the river.
What people say
Nitzan Gefen believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
