Nitzan Segal

Administrator, about 37 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Nitzan Segal runs the town’s records office with a calm that reads as stillness, though their hands rarely stop—filing, tapping a pen, straightening a stack of forms. They are curious only when something is placed before them, turning a ledger over like a stone, but they trust no story until it repeats. The town knows them as steady, unflappable, always in a knot of colleagues at the noon bell. They want the fields to yield, same as anyone. At home, their children wake speaking a sentence Nitzan has carried since birth, and they say nothing of it, only watch the fog line from the office window, and work.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; slow to believe anyone; hard to anger; always in company; never still.

What people say

Nitzan Segal believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
