Perez Erez, child

Child

Perez Erez

Child, about 11 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Perez Erez is a small, sturdy child with earth under their nails and a stillness in their limbs that never quite arrives; even at four, they are always halfway to somewhere, squatting to inspect a stone, trailing a stick through dust, circling the mill wheel’s shadow. They are content to watch the adults talk, trusting that the world will explain itself when it must, and rarely do they cry—except when woken by that one sentence they carry like a pebble in a pocket: *the fog is just fog*. At the square and the mill, they sat with Hillel and Hadassah, not asking questions, just listening. The town sees them as a quiet, busy presence, a child who will work the fields someday, and who, oddly, seems unafraid of the wall of white.

Temperament

Content not to ask; trusting, within reason; hard to anger; friendly enough; never still.

What people say

Perez Erez believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
