Samuel Segal, child

Child

Samuel Segal

Child, about 14 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Samuel Segal is a small, deliberate presence on the riverbank, all elbows and bare feet, with a habit of lining up pebbles in a row before tossing them in one by one. They rarely ask questions, but they watch a thing—a heron, a broken oar, a stranger’s face—until it gives up its secret. The town knows them as the quiet Segal child, the one who can sit for an hour and come back with a calm that unsettles the adults. What Samuel wants is to see the fog do it: measure differently. They have tried watching it from the same stump on different days, and they are almost certain now that the edge of the world leans in, just slightly, when no one is looking. They do not say this out loud. They believe the fields need working, and they also believe the fog is a door that is not closed against them. That is enough.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; friendly enough; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Samuel Segal believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog does not measure the same twice.”
