Shem Amir, plumber

Plumber

Shem Amir

Plumber, about 30 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Shem Amir, the plumber, is a lean, quick-handed young person whose coveralls always smell faintly of solder and river water. They are the one who will stop mid-repair to ask a customer about the weather or a rumor, nodding along with total absorption, and they are the one the elders send to fetch things because Shem never argues. Their habit is to sit on the mill’s low stone wall after a job, legs dangling, watching the fog roll its slow, white weight along the boundary. They want to see it part, just once, and step through to whatever is on the other side, not to escape, but to know. The town finds them harmless, a little dreamy, and quietly useful—the sort who will fix a leak at dusk without complaint.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; friendly enough; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Shem Amir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
