Shiloh Segal, child

Child

Shiloh Segal

Child, about 16 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Shiloh Segal is a small, quick child who works the riverbank like it’s a proper chore, hauling wet stones into a pile just to watch the water close over them. They sit with their knees drawn up, chin on their wrists, and never ask what the fog hides, only that they believe the fields need tending, and the fog is the edge of the world—though some nights, half-asleep, they murmur *the fog is just fog* and then flush, angry, as if caught stealing. The town knows them as Elam’s boy, hot-tempered in games, always at someone’s elbow, never alone. They want a dog with a gray coat. They are expected to be fine.

Temperament

Content not to ask; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; always in company; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Shiloh Segal believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
