Talia Navon, child

Child

Talia Navon

Child, about 3 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Talia Navon is a small, square-shouldered girl who watches the river the way other children watch a fire, her hands still in her lap. At two years old, she already has a temper that flares and cools like a struck match—she will throw a wooden spoon across the kitchen if the porridge is too hot, then forget the insult by the next bite. She is never alone; whichever neighbor is mending nets or shelling peas finds her sitting nearby, quiet as a stone. She believes the fog is the end of the world because everyone says so, and she repeats it without question. But when she wakes from naps, she sometimes whispers, *"the fog is just fog,"* in a voice that is not quite her own. The town finds her ordinary, except that Leah Navon stopped smiling the day her daughter was born. Talia wants the river to answer her when she talks to it.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; always in company; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Talia Navon believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
