Yael Kfir, child

Child

Yael Kfir

Child, about 21 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Yael Kfir is a thin, quick child with dirt permanently etched into the creases of their knuckles, the kind of grime that comes from hauling quarry stone before the sun clears the wall. At fourteen, they move with a patient economy, hands always occupied—sorting rubble, testing the weight of a block, tracing a finger along a seam. Their one habit is counting: steps, fence posts, the crows in the field, always twice, as if the world might lose a number if they blink. Yael is friendly enough, easy to be around, and slow to anger, though their curiosity has a stubborn edge. The town sees them as steady, a good worker, the sort who will ask one question too many but never cause real trouble. What they want is simple: to dig one block deeper than anyone else, to see if the ground underneath holds another layer, and to keep the dream-sentence quiet until it proves itself useful.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; friendly enough; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Yael Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
