Zev Eshel, pharmacist

Pharmacist

Zev Eshel

Pharmacist, about 88 years old. Born in Neshiyah, like everyone.

Zev Eshel compounds salves at a scarred walnut counter, his spectacles perched low, the white coat loose on a frame that has thinned but not stooped. He measures everything twice—roots, powders, the soft weight of a patient’s wrist—and once, on a clear morning, he measured the fog itself with a knotted string, earning a fine from three different guards on three separate days. He pays without argument, then goes to sit by the river, watching the water carry what it carries. He wants the cough remedy to work better for the miller’s child. The town calls him harmless, and mostly they are right.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; friendly enough; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Zev Eshel believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
