A person of Neshiyah
Zipporah Kfir, child
Child
Zipporah Kfir
Child, about 18 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.
Zipporah Kfir is a thin child with quick, light hands, usually mending a net or sorting river stones into neat piles for no reason but the doing. They sit by the water where the bank bends, legs tucked, humming a tune they half-remember. Their habit is to touch things—a leaf, a rope, a shoulder—as if testing that the world holds. They want a boat of their own, wide enough to lie flat in and watch the fog. The town sees them as Liesl’s boy, gentle and easy, the one who says odd things without knowing they are odd. When asked what they mean by their old dream-words, Zipporah shrugs. The fog is just fog, they say, and go back to their stones.
Temperament
Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hard to anger; always in company; given to sitting by the river.
What people say
Zipporah Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
The dream
Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
