Adah Gilad, instrument maker

Instrument maker

Adah Gilad

Instrument maker, about 89 years old. Born in Neshiyah, like everyone.

Adah Gilad’s hands were the only part of her that moved quickly, fitting brass shims and catgut with a precision the town called witchcraft, though she called it patience. At eighty-nine, she was a landmark by the Lethe, a thin figure in a wool coat who sat for hours watching the water, her curiosity a quiet, chewing thing that trusted no rumor until she’d tested it herself. The Council’s guards had turned her back from the east road twice, and she’d obeyed, but her obedience had a private edge. After her long talk with Leah Navon at the mill, and a solitary day by the river, she returned calm, certain this place was built by someone who meant us well. She wanted to see the fog’s underside, just once. The town called her harmless, and left her alone.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; happiest alone; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Adah Gilad believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
