Avner Raz, child

Child

Avner Raz

Child, about 1 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Avner Raz is a small, sturdy child with a scabbed chin from a fall off the porch, and hair the color of wet straw that stands up in the back no matter how often Tamar smooths it. At a year old, he walks with a determined stagger, and his favorite place is the riverbank, where he sits for long minutes, tossing pebbles into the current and watching the rings fade. He flies into a red-faced fury when his blanket is taken, but he is patient with the geese. The town knows him as the baby who talks in his sleep, who murmured "the fog is just fog" before he could say *mama*. Tamar tells no one she believes him. Avner wants to touch the fog’s edge, just once, to see if it is wet.

Temperament

Curious to a fault; trusting, within reason; hot-tempered; happiest alone; given to sitting by the river.

What people say

Avner Raz believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
