Child

Eli Ofer

Child, about 4 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

At four, Eli Ofer has the stillness of a stone in a dry creek. They sit on the porch rail for an hour, watching the fog line, not fidgeting, not asking what is behind it. Malachi’s son was born the same day the father reported the whispered sentence, and the town lets that be coincidence. Eli helps in the field the way small children do: carrying one seed at a time, placing it exactly, wiping dirt from their own knees before standing. Their habit is to press a palm flat to the ground before they rise, as if checking the earth is still there. They want the fog to lift. The town sees Eli as quiet, reliable, a little too patient for a child. No one asks what they remember.

Temperament

Content not to ask; slow to believe anyone; hard to anger; happiest alone; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Eli Ofer believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
