Child

Naomi Eshel

Child, about 2 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Naomi Eshel is a small, dense child with a serious mouth and hair that stands up at the crown no matter how often her mother wets it down. She sits by the river on the low stone shelf where the older boys clean fish, watching the water fold over itself, patient for a girl who still falls asleep mid-bite. When something is placed in front of her—a spoon, a stone, a stranger’s hand—she takes it and turns it over with blunt fingers, her attention absolute and brief. She believes what she is told, that the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working, because that is what everyone says. But at night she wakes and whispers the sentence she has carried since before she could walk: the fog does not measure the same twice. The town knows her as Uriel’s daughter, a hot-tempered child who will not sleep alone, and they do not ask why her first words were not for anyone here.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; always in company; given to sitting by the river.
