Child

Oren Kfir

Child, about 3 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Oren Kfir, three years old, trails a wooden cart through the turned soil, stopping to press a fist into a wet clod and watch it crumble. They are even-tempered, content in any company, and can sit through a long meal without fuss. Their eyes fix on whatever is placed before them—a beetle, a torn glove—with a stillness that makes adults pause mid-sentence. The town knows them as easy, a child who never startles at the fog wall or questions the rhythm of the rows. But when they wake, they say the same thing, softly, as if reciting a lesson: *the fog is just fog.* No one corrects them. They simply pat Oren’s head and return to the work that must be done. What they want is to see the edge up close, though they never ask.

Who Oren is

Oren Kfir, a 3-year-old boy, the son of Tamar Kfir, known for waking from sleep repeating a strange phrase.

“I am three years old. I like to watch the fog from the window, but Mama says it's just fog. Sometimes I wake up and I say 'the fog is just fog' and I don't know why. I think it's just a thing I say, like a song I learned.”
Oren, in their own words

Raised and taught

Raised by a caring mother who teaches him to trust what he is told. Too young for formal schooling; taught by his mother Tamar at home, learning words and simple routines.

Their life so far

Oren was born to Tamar Kfir and has been a healthy, even-tempered child. From his earliest months, he would wake from sleep and repeat the phrase 'the fog is just fog' in a clear voice, words no one had taught him. His mother noted this and told others, but Oren himself does not remember saying it. He is now a curious toddler, always in company, quick to accept what adults tell him.

Wants

To understand the world around him, especially the fog, and to be liked by the adults he trusts.

Fears

Being alone or being separated from his mother.

Why Oren acts this way

Oren acts out of trust in his mother and other adults, believing what they tell him. His curiosity is sparked when something is directly in front of him, but he doesn't question what he's told beyond that.

Keeps to themselves

He sometimes feels the fog is watching him, but he doesn't tell anyone because they say it's just fog.

How close Oren is to the truth: Asleep

He is a toddler who accepts the world as it is told to him; his repeated phrase is a curiosity to others but not to him.

What Oren believes now: He believes the fog is just fog, as he has been told and as he repeats in his sleep. He doesn't yet wonder why he says those words.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; even-tempered; always in company; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Oren Kfir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”
