Devorah Eshel walks the town’s perimeter with a brass level and a worn leather notebook, her gray hair pinned tight under a wide-brimmed hat. At work she moves slowly, deliberately, as if the ground itself might change its mind, and she likes to squat by the river at dusk, watching the water carry off her day’s measurements. The town knows her as fair but hard to convince; she nods at a story, then checks it twice against her own eyes. What she wants is a map that holds true past the fog’s edge, though she’d never say so. Most mornings she sits with Leah Navon at the square, saying little, listening to everything.
