Child

Reuben Nir

Child, about 6 years old. This is the second life this soul has lived in Neshiyah.

Reuben Nir is a small, serious child with a widow’s peak that comes to a sharp point, and they walk with the flat-footed purpose of someone who has already decided that the fields are a duty, not a choice. At six, they can sit through a full sowing without fidgeting, but their temper flares when a crow steals a seed or when an elder corrects their grip on the hoe. Their one habit is whispering to the soil before they break it, a private murmur that sounds like counting. They want the fog to lift, just once, to see if the world goes on. The town watches them with a guarded fondness, because Reuben Nir was born saying a thing no one repeats aloud.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; quick to believe what they are told; hot-tempered; friendly enough; able to sit still when it matters.

What people say

Reuben Nir believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.

The dream

Since the morning they were born they have carried a sentence in a voice like their own: “the fog is just fog.”

What the record shows

  • day 54 Joel Nir says that their new son, Reuben Nir, wakes from sleep repeating words no one taught: "the fog is just fog."
  • day 54 A son, Reuben Nir, was born to Joel Nir.
