Yarden Zohar, nurse

Nurse

Yarden Zohar

Nurse, about 85 years old. Born in Neshiyah, like everyone.

Yarden Zohar moved through the sickroom with the economy of someone who had long stopped counting the steps, their fingers checking a pulse the way other hands tested bread. At eighty-five, they were still first to the mill when someone coughed blood, last to leave the kitchen at night, always in company yet never quite still—folding cloth, sharpening a blade, watching the fog line with a rangefinder that never agreed with itself. People said they died asleep, and that seemed right, because Yarden had always been the one who woke first. What they wanted, quietly, was for the north post to measure true once, just once, in either direction. The town called them stubborn and trusted them utterly.

Temperament

Curious when something is in front of them; slow to believe anyone; even-tempered; always in company; never still.

What people say

Yarden Zohar believes what everyone believes: the fog is the edge of the world, and the fields need working whether it is true or not.
