The River Rock and the Sixteen
Letter 93 of the Book of Forgetting
At the bench by the river, the fog had not lifted. Keziah Shalev sat beside me, legs swinging, a smooth blue stone in her palm. The river ran brown and fast twenty meters below. Peleg Kfir stood at the edge of the path, clipboard in hand, his dark blue jacket the only color in the white glare. Liora Navon came up from the mill road, thermos in hand, wiping grease from her forearm.
"Fernando. The rock in my pocket is still warm. You said the test showed nothing."
"Flux and conductivity were clean. The thermal probe gave a reading that doesn't fit any pattern I know. That's different from nothing."
I set my mug on the bench strut and took the thermal probe from my pack. Needle tip, digital readout, calibrated that morning. Keziah handed me the stone. It weighed seventeen grams on my palm scale. The surface caught the afternoon sun, a blue like a gas flame.
"At zero meters, the surface reads two point three degrees above ambient. At twenty meters, it matches air temperature. The well and orchard rocks match air temperature at both marks. Only the river rock does this."
I touched the probe to the stone where it lay on the bench slat. The display settled at twenty point one Celsius. Air thermometer on the strut read eighteen point four. I walked the twenty meters to the river's edge, boots sinking in damp gravel, and measured again. Eighteen point four. The stone cooled in my hand as I walked back.
"He wouldn't say. Just the fine. Seven coin. Mama asked and he said the record speaks for itself."
"The chain is clean: Watch passed the message, guard delivered the fine, no intermediary named. Same pattern as the north post split and the sixteen-day letter gap."
"The words in my head say count the stones again. The quarry has seven blocks. The Council notice has seven initials. The prize is two hundred twelve coin. The north post reads two twelve outbound."
"Two twelve outbound, one ninety-six inbound. Difference of sixteen. The talent contest prize matches the outbound reading exactly. That's not coincidence."
She slipped the stone back into her pocket. A leaf detached from an alder, spiraled down, hit the water. I counted in my head: four point something. Another leaf. Five point something. No two the same.
Peleg wrote in his clipboard. "Joel, Elam, Kenan. All turned back at the fog line with the same reminder. The Council prefers people to stay at their work. That's the wording every time."
"Did any of them say what they were going for?"
"Joel said he was checking the quarry count. Elam said he was walking the south orchard line. Kenan didn't say. Just walked back."
"The quarry has seven blocks where the survey lists six. Fresh chisel dust on the seventh. Zipporah saw it again this morning."
Peleg didn't look up. "The Council notice bears seven initials. The Council has five members. Kenan named the Clerk and Keeper but the ledgers show no such initials."
"Sixteen meters at the north post. Sixteen days on the Exchange letter to Kinneret Gefen. The talent contest prize is two-twelve coin. Same number the rangefinder reads outbound."
"Coincidences pile up in ledgers too. Doesn't mean they're connected."
Liora poured coffee from her thermos into a metal cup. Steam rose in the cold air. "The mill test is tomorrow. Carmel Nir and Nava Sharon came to blows there yesterday over nothing much. Peleg had to separate them."
"Over what?"
"Over a wrench. Who used it last. Who put it back wrong. Nothing that matters."
Peleg closed his clipboard. "I'm at the north post at noon. Nitzan Navon is running the two-instrument test at first light. Noam Elon is going at the fourth hour to catch the exact hour the split disappears. The anomaly holds at first and second hour. Vanishes by midday. The flip happens between second hour and midday."
"The well calibration with Noa Hadar's recorder and parabolic reflector is the last piece before the cap next month. She hasn't been at the square in weeks."
"Then find her. The cap doesn't wait."
Keziah said, "Fernando, will you measure the river rock with your thermal probe again at zero meters and twenty meters? Liora and Peleg are coming to watch. I need to see if the twelve point four degrees shows up again, and whether the reading changes at the same hour the north post rangefinder anomaly disappears."
"I remember twelve point four above air at zero with clean flux. The four-tenths is the part that doesn't fit a design. I will measure again at zero and twenty with Liora and Peleg watching."
"Clean flux, conductivity stable. If the four-tenths returns, I will note whether the reading shifts at the exact hour the north post rangefinder goes clean."
The guard captain's clipboard clicked. He said, "Fernando. The river test?"
"Thermal anomaly at zero meters only. Two point three degrees above ambient. Flux and conductivity clean at both marks. The well and orchard rocks match air temperature at both marks."
Peleg wrote.

"Coincidences pile up in ledgers too. Doesn't mean they're connected."
I touched the probe to the river rock at zero meters. The display settled at twenty point one Celsius. Air thermometer on the strut read eighteen point four. The four point seven difference sat in the air between us, clean and unexplained.
Keziah said, ":count the stones again: the rock is warm at zero and cold at twenty, and the numbers keep matching: seven blocks, seven initials, two, twelve, sixteen, sixteen."
"I will record the reading at zero and twenty. If twelve point four returns, I will check whether the anomaly at the north post has also shifted."
The day held. The fog wall stayed white at the east road's end. Somewhere in the town hall, a ledger was closed. The mill test would come tomorrow, and with it another set of measurements nobody could explain.
